Eric Alexander und mein Mann starten 2012 eine neue Mini-Europa-Tour. Eigentlich standen die Gigs schon längst fest, aber vor ein paar Wochen brach dann ganz plötzlich ein wesentlicher Teil der Tour weg - das Jazzhouse in Kopenhagen hat wohl einen größeren Wasserschaden und alle drei Gigs abgesagt, total frustrierend. Ich bin nun leider überhaupt kein Tour-Manager und habe immer nur den Hamburg Gig organisiert, weil ich ja früher dort gewohnt habe. Ich habe aber versprochen, auszuhelfen und mich in Deutschland umzuhören, ob evtl ein paar Ersatzgigs zu kriegen sind. Es geht grob um den 02.-5.März 2012, wobei der 03.05. voraussichtlich das Birdland in HH sein wird. Hat jemand sonst noch Ideen, wo ich anfragen könnte oder sucht jemand vielleicht ganz dringend eine Band in dem Zeitraum ? Ich hänge mal die Presseinfo an..

Dave O’Higgins and Eric Alexander with the Kristian Leth Trio

This collaboration began in 2008 on the suggestion of Danish drummer, Kristian Leth, that Dave & Eric would make a great team. This has certainly proven to be the case – the sparks have flown on the stage & the 2 protagonists have struck up a great rapport. It has been an inspiration to witness such a pairing of New York & London’s finest! The band has already undertaken 4 European tours, kicking off at Ronnie Scotts in London. The album, Sketch Book (on Jazzizit Records) was released in March 2009 to rave reviews. A new CD, recorded in August 2010, The Devil’s Interval (on JVG Productions) has just been released. Expect some roaring 2-tenor blowing in the time honoured tradition, with a respectful doffing of the cap to Gene Ammons & Sonny Stitt, Ronnie Scott & Tubby Hayes and many other greats.

Eric Alexander (tenor sax)
Runner up to Joshua Redman in 1991 Thelonius Monk International Saxophone Competition (Chris Potter came 3rd), Eric made his first solo recording in 1992. He has appeared as leader, sideman, producer & composer on probably 60-70 albums so far.
Eric tours the world over regularly to capacity audiences. He has developed a distinctive voice within the illustrious bop-based tradition of players such as Monk, Dizzy, Sonny Stitt, Clifford Brown, Sonny Rollins, Jackie McLean and Joe Henderson. He lives in New York & can be heard regularly at the legendary club, Smoke.
Eric plays frequently with Mike LeDonne, David Hazeltine & the co-led group One For All with Jim Rotondi, Steve Davis, Joe Farnsworth, Peter Washington, and Dave Hazeltine. In 2004, Eric signed an exclusive contract with the New York-based independent jazz label, HighNote Records where he has amassed a considerable discography of critically-acclaimed recordings. Most recent among them is “Temple of Olympic Zeus”), “The Battle” with Vincent Herring and Mike LeDonne and “It’s all in the Game” with Harold Mabern.

Dave O’Higgins (tenor sax)
Dave is twice winner of Best Tenor Sax at the British Jazz Awards. Dave leads various incarnations of his own group, most notably the Dave O’Higgins Quartet & Septet. He has worked with BBC Big Band, Ronnie Scotts Allstars, Chico Chagas, Itchy Fingers, Martin Taylor, Jim Mullen, Joe Locke, Joey Calderazzo, Jamie Cullum, Kyle Eastwood, John Dankworth & Cleo Laine, Matthew Herbert, Jimmy Smith, Frank Sinatra & Ray Charles to name a few.
The Devil’s Interval is Dave’s 12th cd release as leader. It was recorded as his new studio where he has recorded over 20 sessions to date – live in the studio with a real piano, no cans, booths, just proper old school! To hear samples go to the website. This has become a great new passion and the hope is to record as many real blowing sessions as possible. Dave can now truly call himself a producer, sound engineer and all the associated skills. The Devil’s Interval and Relaxin’ At Mount Lavinia were both recorded, mixed and mastered in the studio.

Kristian Leth (drums)
Kristian Leth is best known as a freelance jazz drummer and teacher.
During the last 10 years he has been touring and recording with many of the greatest American & European jazz artists including Benny Golson, Scott Hamilton, Eric Alexander, Harold Mabern, Tim Hagans, Tim Ries, Dave O’Higgins, Jan Lundgren, Eythor Gunnarsson, Sigudur Flosason.
In Denmark he has been performing with Mads Baerentzen, Willy Egmose, Jacob Fischer, Jesper Thilo, Finn Ziegler, Carten Dahl, Jesper Bodilsen and Lennart Ginman.
Kristian is also active as a session player in the studio & live with symphony orchestras.

When he emerged in the early 1990s, American tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander was hailed as the new sax star to watch, but his devotion to a big, bluesy, lazily-swinging tenor sound from as far back as the 1940s has sidelined him as a gifted neoclassicist. This week, he has been proving this to be an over-simplification.
Alexander has been operating in a formidable two-tenor partnership with Dave O’Higgins, in a lineup instigated by young Danish drummer Kristian Leth, and completed by the classy bass and piano partnership of Arnie Somogyi and James Pearson. The two saxophonists are both bop experts, so the repertoire stayed with standards, and hooky, improv-triggering tunes by Sonny Rollins and Steve Grossman. Alexander fruitfully joins the big sound of Dexter Gordon to the early, pre-free multiphonic investigations of John Coltrane, so the contrast between O’Higgins’ soulfully rough-edged playing and his pebble-hard, melodically zig-zagging solos provided unflagging variety, and a potentially formulaic gig got hotter and hotter as it unfolded. The classic two-tenor improvised counterpoint of legendary pairings such as Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt, or Johnny Griffin and Lockjaw Davis, was exuberantly celebrated in the two saxophonists’ thundering finales.
George Shearing’s She invited a bluesy mid-tempo groove, and if Alexander slipped into a few trademark fills and embroidery on the ballad All the Way, a stomping jam on O’Higgins’ Frith Street Blues (with pianist Pearson breaking into a stride-piano firework display) brought a smile to the American’s face. It was very familiar music, but the participants’ enjoyment was infectious.

Making a long overdue debut at Ronnie Scott’s — “I guess that’s so, apart from a couple of jam sessions” — is this fine US tenorist, who first impressed London a decade ago in a group led by Clint Eastwood’s bassist son, Kyle. A commanding improviser with a hard-edged yet warm sound, his probing harmonic approach reflects George Coleman more than the usual Rollins and Coltrane.
Tall and upright, he’s also one of the superfit new breed of jazz professionals, a product of jazz conservatories rather than smoky basements. He runs half-marathons and likes jogging around a new city before playing its nightclubs. Fans who braved a freezing Bank Holiday Monday to catch his opening night were rewarded with a well-paced set of flab-free contemporary jazz.
Though new to one another, Danish drummer Kristian Leth, Hungarian bassist Arnie Somogyi and British pianist James Pearson made an excellent rhythm section and tenorist Dave O’Higgins responded brilliantly to the challenge of playing alongside Alexander. At times their booting ensembles recalled the past glories of two-tenor groups such as Sonny Stitt and Gene Ammons or Johnny Griffin and Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis. When they resume rivalries again tonight, they will probably sound even better.

There's something about two tenor saxophones that seems to make sparks. About a year ago, inspired by three exhilarating nights at Ronnie Scott's, this pair went straight on to record this dazzling session. Because it was done "as live", in the course of one afternoon, the music has the kind of grip that polished and prepared jazz, however brilliant, never quite achieves. They're both such phenomenally good players that there's no question of rivalry, just a little extra sharpness to the performance. The same can be said for the rhythm section of James Person, Arnie Somogyi and Kristian Leth.

frag mal beim Jazz Club Hannover an. Die sind recht flexibel, und es gibt des öfteren ausser der Reihe Veranstaltungen, wobei Samstag und Sonntag eher nicht infrage kommen. der 2. (Freitag) und der 5. (Montag) sind aber Tage, an denen meistens was stattfindet. Diese Termine scheinen auch noch nicht belegt zu sein.

Nein, Dave hat noch keinen Kontakt mit Alex aufgenommen, da derzeit kein Projekt realistisch ist. Er kann sich natürlich einfach mal so bei Alex melden...

Also das mit dem Wasserschaden ist das hier Jazzhouse. Die haben auch über den 1.Feb hinaus erstmal alles abgesagt... Dänemark ist aber auch nicht meine Baustelle, das muss Kristian Leth, Dave's Co-Organisator regeln. Ich bin sicher, dass er alles versucht.

@Saxolina und Dirk: Danke für die Vorschläge, ich werde nochmal ein paar emails rausschicken.

Das Problem ist ja nicht nur, ob sie die Band wollen, sondern auch, ob sie es sich leisten können Wenn Dave und Kristian am Ende für lau spielen, damit Eric seine vereinbarte Gage bekommt, lohnt sich der ganze Aufwand auch nicht mehr.

Der Ort ist die "Wilhelm13", als Veranstalter kommen der Jazzclub oder die Jazzmusikerinitiative in Frage.

Dass ihr nicht für lau spielen wollt und könnt, ist mir schon klar.

keiner soll für lau spielen!
Frag einfach mal an; hängt sicher davon ab, wie die ihr Budget schon eingeteilt haben und was sie nächstes Jahr für Schwerpunkte setzen.
Prinzipiell sollte so ein Club sowas bezahlen können. Chris Potter u.a. werden auch nicht umsonst gespielt haben...

Moin allerseits!
nur mal ein kleines Update: Leider sind alle meine Versuche, weitere Konzerte in D zu organisieren, gescheitert, es bleibt bei dem einen Gig im Hamburger Birdland, der Rest der Tour findet im UK statt.

Das Konzert im Birdland ist am Freitag, 02.03.2012.
Vielleicht sieht man den ein oder anderen beim Konzert? Würde mich freuen!

aber 670 km für ein Konzert ist mir doch zu weit.
Selbst wenn Eric Alexander und Dave O´Higgins da spielen.
Wirklich schade! Hätte die beiden sehr gerne mal live erlebt.

Ich habe gerade von Vincent Herring erfahren, dass er mit Eric diesen Herbst (Oktober/November) auf Tour gehen wird, und zwar sind da auch mehrere Konzerte in Deutschland (hauptsächlich Süddeutschland) und Österreich.
Ich kann gerne die Daten bekanntgeben, falls sich jemand dafür interessiert.
